Homeschooling in AK

Alaska, like many other states, has a very well put together Homeschooling program, but also like other states, there are constant changes that occur within the homeschooling legislation. The most recent, in the state of Alaska’s case, was an attempt to raise the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 18. This meant that children through to the age of 18 would be required to attend school. The bill clarified the raise by stating that from 16 to 18, children could work as long as they did not work and attended school for more than 9 hours in one day.

Fortunately, this bill was not even able to get passed the Special Committee on Education and has since been put on the backburner. This example shows that Alaska has a strong commitment to maintaining a reasonable education plan for children, while still promoting early development of work experience.

Homeschooling in Alaska is supported by several large support groups organized to offer the highest level of assistance to parents around the state.
In addition to the fantastic support, the state of Alaska also offers a variety of programs for homeschooler that promote a better understanding of the Alaskan wilderness. For more information about these programs, please see the Interior Distance Education of Alaska link located on the resources page.
